Pralhad Joshi Appointed Union Education Minister After Dharmendra Pradhan’s Exit; Major Cabinet Reshuffle Amid NEET Row

New Delhi: In a significant political development, senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Pralhad Joshi has been appointed as the new Union Education Minister after President Droupadi Murmu accepted the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan on Saturday. The appointment was made on the advice of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and comes at a time when the country’s education system is under intense public scrutiny.

Pradhan’s resignation follows weeks of nationwide protests and mounting political pressure over the alleged irregularities in the NEET examination process. Student organisations, opposition parties, and civil society groups had demanded accountability, with protests taking place across several states. The resignation marks one of the most significant ministerial changes in the Modi government’s third term.

Pralhad Joshi, a veteran parliamentarian from Karnataka and a seven-time Member of Parliament from Dharwad, is regarded as one of the BJP’s experienced administrators. He currently serves as Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution and New & Renewable Energy. With the latest reshuffle, he has also been entrusted with the Education Ministry, a portfolio that oversees school education, higher education, the National Testing Agency (NTA), UGC, AICTE, IITs, IIMs, central universities and implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

The leadership change comes at a crucial time as the Centre faces growing expectations to restore public confidence in India’s examination system, strengthen transparency in competitive examinations, and implement reforms to prevent future paper leaks and examination malpractices. Joshi is expected to review ongoing reforms and accelerate measures aimed at improving the credibility and efficiency of the country’s education framework.

Political observers believe the appointment reflects the government’s effort to ensure administrative stability while addressing concerns raised by students and parents across the country. The Education Ministry is likely to remain under close public and parliamentary scrutiny in the coming months as it works on examination reforms and institutional accountability.
