New Delhi/Islamabad, Jan 1:
India and Pakistan on Thursday exchanged lists of their respective nuclear installations and facilities through diplomatic channels, in accordance with a long-standing bilateral agreement, the Ministry of External Affairs said.
The exchange was carried out under the Agreement on the Prohibition of Attacks against Nuclear Installations and Facilities, signed on December 31, 1988, and in force since January 27, 1991. Under the pact, both countries are obligated to share information on nuclear installations covered by the agreement on January 1 every calendar year.
This marks the 35th consecutive exchange of such lists between the two countries. The first exchange took place on January 1, 1992.
The agreement is aimed at preventing attacks on each other’s nuclear facilities and is considered an important confidence-building measure to enhance nuclear safety and reduce risks in the region.
The latest exchange comes amid heightened bilateral tensions. Despite the strained relations, the annual sharing of nuclear installation lists has continued uninterrupted, underscoring the commitment of both sides to the provisions of the 1988 agreement.
