Aichi-Nagoya, October 2, 2026 (JK Patrika): India’s women’s hockey team ended a 44-year wait for Asian Games gold by defeating defending champions China 1-0 in the final on Friday, securing the continental title and a direct qualification berth for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
Lalremsiami scored the decisive goal in the 10th minute, marking her 200th international appearance with a crucial strike that ultimately proved enough to settle the closely contested final. India then produced a determined defensive performance to protect their narrow lead against sustained Chinese pressure.
Veteran goalkeeper Savita Punia played a key role in India’s victory, making a crucial save from a penalty stroke as China pressed for an equaliser. The Indian defence remained resolute through the remainder of the contest, keeping China scoreless and securing the gold medal.
The victory marks only the second Asian Games women’s hockey gold medal in India’s history. India had previously won the title in 1982 in New Delhi, when women’s hockey made its Asian Games debut. The team later finished runners-up in 1998 and 2018, before finally reclaiming the gold after more than four decades.
The gold medal also carries an important Olympic significance. By winning the Asian Games title, India secured direct qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, giving the team a return to the Olympic stage after missing the Paris 2024 Games.
India entered the final after defeating South Korea 2-0 in the semifinal, while China reached the title clash after overcoming hosts Japan in a shootout.
The historic triumph adds another major chapter to Indian women’s hockey, with the team combining Lalremsiami’s early strike, disciplined defending and Savita Punia’s decisive goalkeeping to reclaim the Asian Games crown after 44 years.
